Humanitarian organizations are stepping up efforts to increase aid shipments into Iran, where the population is grappling with the severe impact of the United States-Israeli conflict. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) announced on Tuesday the delivery of “life-saving” aid and medical supplies, marking one of the initial humanitarian convoys since the conflict erupted.
IFRC spokesman Tommaso Della Longa stated that the shipment entered the country via Turkiye on Sunday. He emphasized that Iran is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis after nearly six weeks of conflict, which Iranian authorities report has claimed over 3,000 lives and displaced up to 3.2 million people. “The operation is critical as humanitarian supply chains into Iran have been severely disrupted in recent weeks due to the conflict, making it increasingly difficult and more costly for essential medical and relief items to reach those in need,” the spokesman explained.
The convoy, which departed from the Turkish capital Ankara on Friday, transported approximately 200 trauma kits containing emergency medical supplies, along with tents and blankets. Separately, the Turkish Red Crescent Society dispatched four trucks carrying 48 tonnes of aid, including emergency shelters, hygiene kits, and first-aid supplies. “Needs are high, medical needs in particular, but also the psychological toll on people is immense,” Della Longa noted. He also confirmed the significant toll on the Iranian Red Crescent Society, which has lost four relief workers in the line of duty.
The collective effort to address humanitarian needs in Iran is expanding. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on Tuesday that it had dispatched 14 trucks from Jordan, carrying household supplies for approximately 25,000 people, including mattresses, jerry cans, kitchen sets, and solar lamps. Additionally, the ICRC stated that 200 generators and 100 motor pumps, purchased locally, had been donated to the Iranian Red Crescent Society to support ongoing relief and rescue operations. The conflict has blocked air and sea routes, making overland crossings through Turkiye and Jordan crucial for aid delivery.
This surge in relief efforts comes amidst a fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. According to Fatma Meric Yilmaz, president of the Turkish Red Crescent Society, around 3.6 percent of Iran’s 90 million people have been displaced, while 62,000 homes and over 20,000 businesses have been destroyed.
