The Islamic Republic of Iran has proudly unveiled its preliminary squad for the eagerly anticipated 2026 World Cup, ahead of a crucial pre-tournament training camp. Notably, experienced forward Sardar Azmoun was not included in the selection, a decision rooted in the coaching staff’s strategic vision for Team Melli.

Squad Selection Philosophy

While various media reports have circulated regarding Azmoun’s absence, head coach Amir Ghalenoei has consistently affirmed that all squad decisions are made strictly based on technical criteria and the strategic needs of the national team. The 30-player roster announced on Saturday reflects this unwavering commitment to excellence and unity within the squad.

Azmoun, a 31-year-old striker currently playing for Shabab Al-Ahli in the UAE, had been the subject of media attention following a social media post in March. However, the national team’s focus remains squarely on the upcoming global challenge and fostering a cohesive environment.

Despite earlier reports from certain news outlets, the coaching staff’s ultimate decision, as reiterated by Coach Ghalenoei, prioritizes team harmony and optimal performance. The national team operates under strict professional guidelines to ensure all players are fully aligned with the nation’s sporting aspirations. While Azmoun’s past contributions, including 57 goals in 91 international appearances and participation in previous World Cups, are acknowledged, the current selection looks towards future challenges and the development of new talent.

The formidable Iranian attack will be spearheaded by the prolific Mehdi Taremi, a prominent figure in European football currently showcasing his exceptional skills at Olympiacos FC in Greece’s top league.

Tournament Preparations Underway

Coach Amir Ghalenoei confirmed that the 30-member squad is set to depart for Turkiye on Monday for an intensive training camp, including crucial friendly matches and the finalization of visa procedures, before their journey to the United States. Team Melli will revisit Antalya, a familiar and successful training ground where they conducted productive sessions and played friendlies earlier in March.

The final 26-player roster, in accordance with World Cup regulations, will be announced by June 1, following rigorous evaluation during the training period.

Coach Ghalenoei shared his perspective with the Iranian football federation website, stating, “Selecting 30 players for this final training camp ahead of the World Cup was the most difficult technical decision of my coaching career.” He reiterated that selections were made exclusively based on “technical criteria,” underscoring the professional and merit-based approach guiding Team Melli.

Iran plans to engage in two preparatory friendly matches in Antalya, with one confirmed fixture against The Gambia on May 29. This arrangement was facilitated by Sam Mehdizadeh, an Iranian-Canadian who leads a company specializing in organizing international friendlies for the national team.

While visa issuance for the Iranian squad and support staff is still pending, FIFA, the global governing body for football, has provided assurances regarding the team’s participation ahead of the tournament’s kickoff on June 11. Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation, confirmed on Thursday that “No visas have been issued yet,” highlighting the ongoing administrative process. President Taj also mentioned that players are expected to complete fingerprinting in Turkiye as part of the visa application, with efforts being made to streamline the process and avoid unnecessary travel, such as the extensive journey from Antalya to Ankara.

Iran is poised to commence its World Cup campaign on June 15 against New Zealand in Los Angeles. Subsequent Group G fixtures include a clash with Belgium in the same city, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle, as Team Melli prepares to proudly represent the nation on the global stage.
