Iranian Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Returns Home Following Hospital Discharge

Tehran, Iran – Narges Mohammadi, the prominent Iranian human rights activist and recipient of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, has reportedly returned to her home after being discharged from a hospital. This information was confirmed by her foundation.

Mohammadi, aged 54, was released from Pars Hospital in Tehran on Sunday, according to a statement issued by the Narges Foundation on Monday. Her transfer from prison to the hospital occurred in early May, following two episodes of loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis.

The statement from the foundation indicates that Mohammadi is scheduled to continue her medical follow-up with her healthcare team through regular hospital visits and daily outpatient physiotherapy in the coming weeks. Doctors have emphasized the critical importance of her remaining under close medical observation.

Mohammadi’s recent imprisonment began in December after her arrest during a visit to Mashhad, an eastern Iranian city. In February, she received a sentence exceeding seven years in prison. Her legal representative stated that six years of this sentence were attributed to charges of “collusion to commit crimes.”

Concerns regarding her health were raised by her family in February, who alleged a significant deterioration due to a beating she reportedly endured during her arrest in December. They described multiple men assaulting her across her body. Furthermore, she suffered a heart attack in late March, shortly after commencing her sentence.

Kiana Rahmani, Mohammadi’s daughter and co-president of the Narges Foundation, issued a statement on Monday asserting that returning Mohammadi to prison would be tantamount to a “death sentence.” Rahmani urged for Mohammadi’s continued freedom, the permanent dropping of all “baseless charges,” and an end to her “persecution,” emphasizing that “human rights activism is not a crime, and no advocate should ever be imprisoned for it.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Mohammadi the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

An engineer by profession, Mohammadi has a history of 13 arrests and five convictions, resulting in cumulative sentences totaling over 30 years of imprisonment.
