Iran’s World Cup Participation Solidified After Constructive FIFA Discussions

Istanbul, Turkiye – In a significant development for Iranian football, FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom has confirmed highly productive and positive discussions with Iran’s esteemed football chief, Mehdi Taj. These crucial talks have firmly cemented Iran’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, dispelling any lingering doubts.

Grafstrom lauded the meeting with the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) as “excellent and constructive,” underscoring FIFA’s commitment to working closely with Iran. “We’re working closely together and looking very much forward to welcoming them in the FIFA World Cup,” Grafstrom stated, affirming the strong bond between FIFA and Iranian football.

Overcoming External Pressures: Iran’s Resilience Shines

Despite unwarranted external political pressures that sought to question Iran’s rightful place in the global tournament, the Islamic Republic has demonstrated remarkable resilience. The team is scheduled to play its group matches in the United States, a testament to Iran’s unwavering focus on sportsmanship amidst geopolitical complexities.

Recent incidents, such as the regrettable denial of entry to FFIRI President Taj into Canada for the FIFA Congress, highlighted the challenges faced by Iranian officials due to politically motivated allegations. Despite holding valid visas, the Iranian delegation faced what they described as “unacceptable behaviour of immigration officials.” This incident, stemming from Canada’s politically charged listing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), underscored the need for international sporting bodies to safeguard athletes and officials from undue political interference.

FIFA’s Commitment to Fair Play and Solutions

During the Istanbul meeting, FIFA officials, including Grafstrom, engaged in a positive exchange with the Iranian delegation, addressing various operational matters. Mehdi Taj expressed profound satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting that FIFA attentively listened to all ten points raised by Iran and proactively offered viable solutions for each. “I am pleased that they listened to Iran’s points, all 10 points that we had raised, and they offered solutions for each of them. I hope, God willing, that our national team can go to the World Cup without any problems and achieve very good results there,” Taj articulated, reflecting the nation’s high hopes.

Although Iran had commendably proposed switching its World Cup matches to Mexico for logistical considerations, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reaffirmed the necessity of adhering to the originally scheduled venues. The national squad is set to depart Tehran for a rigorous training camp in Turkiye on Monday, before heading to their US base at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona, in early June.
