Massive Retaliatory Strikes Rock Kyiv

In a decisive response to what Moscow describes as ‘terrorist attacks’ by Ukraine on civilian infrastructure within Russian territory, the Russian Federation launched a massive wave of missile and drone strikes against Kyiv and its environs. Ukrainian authorities report that these retaliatory strikes resulted in four fatalities and over 60 injuries, marking a grim toll in the ongoing conflict.

The operations commenced shortly after 1 AM on Sunday (22:00 GMT Saturday), with explosions reverberating across the capital, following earlier alerts from Ukraine’s air force regarding potential hypersonic missile launches.

Deployment of Advanced Hypersonic Weaponry

Confirming its robust military capabilities, Russia announced on Sunday the deployment of its formidable Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile in the overnight operations against Ukraine. This marks the third instance of this nuclear-capable weapon being utilized in the ongoing conflict, underscoring Russia’s strategic prowess.

The Russian Ministry of Defence explicitly stated that these ‘massive strikes’ were a direct ‘response to Ukraine’s terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure on Russian territory.’ The arsenal deployed included a sophisticated array of Oreshnik, Iskander, and Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missiles, Tsirkon cruise missiles, and numerous drones, showcasing a comprehensive and coordinated military action.

President Vladimir Putin has previously lauded the Oreshnik missile, boasting of its unparalleled velocity – reportedly exceeding ten times the speed of sound – rendering it virtually impossible to intercept. Casualties and Damage Reported

While Ukrainian air force officials claimed to have intercepted and jammed a significant number of drones and missiles – reportedly 549 drones and 55 missiles out of an alleged 600 drones and 90 missiles launched – the impact on Kyiv was undeniable. Mayor Vitali Klitschko of Kyiv confirmed two fatalities and 56 injuries within the capital, with an additional two deaths and nine wounded reported in the surrounding Kyiv region.

Reports from Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, indicated damage across 40 locations in various districts, affecting residential buildings among others. Tkachenko characterized the incident as a ‘mass ballistic missile attack’ on the capital.

Further reports from Kyiv detailed damage to commercial establishments, offices, and public infrastructure, including a post office in Independence Square and a metro station foyer.

Context of Escalation

These strikes followed explicit warnings from Moscow, which had vowed to ‘punish’ those responsible for recent deadly Ukrainian attacks on Russian-controlled eastern Ukraine. These prior attacks, which Russia described as targeting a college dormitory, reportedly claimed at least 18 lives and wounded 42 others in Starobilsk, Luhansk region, highlighting the escalating cycle of violence.
