Overnight Russian attacks across eight regions of Ukraine have resulted in at least five fatalities and 30 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The central Ukrainian city of Dnipro bore the brunt of the assault, with over 20 people reported wounded, including a nine-year-old child and two police officers, as stated by Ukraine’s National Police on Telegram.
Tragically, two individuals lost their lives in Nizhyn, located in the northern Chernihiv region, while a one-year-old boy was among those injured in the Kharkiv region, police confirmed. Rescue operations are currently underway at a residential building in Dnipro, with emergency services actively working in various regions across Ukraine, including Chernihiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv.
Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin reported on Telegram that one person was wounded in attacks on Sloviansk, and another in Kramatorsk. The assaults also caused damage to six homes, five high-rise buildings, and other structures, including a post office and a church.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 619 drones and 47 missiles during these attacks. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted or suppressed 610 of these aerial threats.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on X on Saturday, stating, “Russia’s tactics remain unchanged – attack drones, cruise missiles, and a significant number of ballistic missiles. Most targets are civilian infrastructure in cities.” He accompanied his post with a video showcasing emergency workers responding to shelled buildings.
These latest aggressions follow closely on the heels of a Russian strike on the port city of Odesa yesterday, which claimed the lives of a Ukrainian married couple, both aged 75. Ukrainian authorities also reported that the strikes destroyed residential buildings and hit a foreign vessel.
This week, the European Union approved a new round of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy, banking, and trade sectors. Discussions on these sanctions had previously faced delays due to opposition from Hungary. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, reiterated the call for a new sanctions package on Friday, telling reporters in Cyprus that the EU is “really pushing.”
In light of the recent attacks, President Zelenskyy urged European leaders to accelerate the sanctions process. He added, “The pause caused by the blocking of the 20th package gave the aggressor additional time to adapt – it is important to counter this.”
