Russian Drone Strikes Chinese-Owned Ship Off Ukraine Ahead of Putin-Xi Meeting
Kyiv, Ukraine – In a significant escalation just hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, Russian drones have reportedly struck two vessels in the Black Sea, including a Chinese-owned cargo ship, as they approached Ukrainian ports.
Details of the Attack
The Ukrainian seaports authority confirmed that the strikes targeted two civilian vessels on Monday. One ship was sailing under a Marshall Islands flag, and the other under Guinea-Bissau’s flag. Both were en route to ports in Ukraine’s vital Odesa region.
The Ukrainian navy specifically identified one of the vessels as the KSL Deyang, a Chinese-owned cargo ship with an all-Chinese crew, operating under the Marshall Islands flag. A photograph released by the Ukrainian navy showed the ship with one of its sides partially charred, indicating the impact of the strike.
Geopolitical Implications
This incident occurs on the eve of Putin’s two-day visit to Beijing, where he is expected to hold crucial talks with Xi. The timing of the attack on a Chinese-owned vessel adds a complex layer to the already intricate relationship between Russia and China, especially given China’s stated position as a neutral party in the conflict and its calls for peace talks, despite never condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the incident via social media, stating, “Drones struck Odesa and one of the UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] hit a vessel owned by China.” He further emphasized, “The Russians could not have been unaware of what vessel was at sea,” suggesting a deliberate targeting or disregard for the vessel’s origin.
Vessel Status and Russian Silence
A spokesman for Ukraine’s navy informed AFP that none of the crew members, all Chinese citizens, were wounded in the attack, and the vessel was able to continue its journey. A source speaking to Reuters clarified that the Deyang was without cargo at the time of the strike, heading to load iron ore concentrate at Ukraine’s Pivdennyi port in Odesa.
Ukrainian navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk added, “The ship was entering for loading. After it was hit at night by a Shahed, the crew coped with the consequences on their own. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the vessel continued on its way to its port of destination.”
There has been no immediate comment from Russia regarding the incident.
Broader Context of Attacks
Russia has consistently targeted civilian vessels and port infrastructure in the Odesa region, a critical maritime hub for Ukrainian agricultural exports, since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine four years ago. Zelenskyy also reported that Russian forces launched a massive overnight assault on Ukrainian territory, deploying 524 drones and 22 missiles, including ballistic and cruise missiles.
