Russian Strikes Claim Lives, Injure Dozens Across Ukraine Amid Stalled Peace Talks
Kyiv, Ukraine – Recent Russian assaults across Ukraine have resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals and left more than 17 injured, according to Ukrainian regional government officials. These attacks unfold as United States-led efforts to broker an end to the conflict remain at a standstill.
Intensified Attacks in Donetsk and Sumy Regions
In the eastern Donetsk region, Vadym Filashkin, head of the military administration, reported on Wednesday that at least two people were killed and four wounded in Russian attacks over the past 24 hours. Filashkin detailed via Telegram that 19 Russian strikes targeted the region, causing significant damage to dozens of residential houses, apartment buildings, an infrastructure facility, and a minibus. The Interfax news agency further noted that intense fighting necessitated the evacuation of 867 people, including 34 children, from frontline areas within the same period.
Meanwhile, in the northeastern border region of Sumy, a separate Russian drone attack claimed the life of one woman. Oleh Hryhorov, head of Sumy’s regional military administration, stated on Telegram that these strikes were “deliberately aimed at residential buildings,” triggering large-scale fires. He confirmed that a 60-year-old resident of one of the affected buildings tragically died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Odesa Hospital Hit in Overnight Assaults
Further south, overnight Russian attacks in Odesa targeted civilian infrastructure, including a hospital. Oleh Kiper, head of the regional military administration, reported on Telegram that the cardiological and surgical departments sustained damage. He added that “as a result of a massive enemy attack, the hospital and residential buildings suffered significant damage, and a fire broke out in the reserve.” Two people were wounded in the Odesa attacks. Al Jazeera’s Audrey Macalpine, reporting from Kyiv, observed that people sought shelter in the hospital’s basement during the assault.
Ukraine Responds with Strikes on Russian Territory
In recent weeks, Ukraine has escalated its counter-attacks, targeting oil refineries, depots, and ports within Russia. These strikes aim to disrupt Russia’s financial resources for the ongoing war. Regional Governor Makhonin confirmed a Ukrainian drone attack on an industrial facility in Perm Krai, approximately 1,500 kilometers into eastern Russia near the Ural Mountains. Makhonin stated on Telegram, “Today, an enemy drone flew into an industrial site in the Perm Municipal District. Workers were evacuated. There were no injuries.”
Peace Efforts Remain Stalled
This latest escalation in hostilities occurs amidst a prolonged pause in US-led peace initiatives designed to end the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in February 2022.
