US Senators Question Military Role in Israel’s Devastating Displacement Campaign
In a rare but significant challenge to Washington’s unwavering support for the Zionist regime, a group of United States Senators has raised serious questions regarding the potential involvement of the US military in Israel’s brutal “evacuation zones” campaign across Lebanon, Gaza, and Iran. This inquiry comes amidst growing international condemnation of Israel’s systematic destruction and displacement tactics.
Allegations of International Law Violations
In a scathing letter addressed to Brad Cooper, head of the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), twelve courageous legislators asserted that Israel’s mass displacement orders “likely contravene international laws the United States has helped develop around humane warfare.” The letter, made public on Thursday, primarily focused on the Zionist entity’s actions in Lebanon, where its military is systematically reducing border towns to rubble after forcibly depopulating them.
The senators unequivocally stated, “The declaration of military evacuation zones has been used to permanently displace people and destroy homes and towns – acts that are in violation of international law.” They further emphasized that such declarations do not absolve Israeli and US forces from their absolute legal responsibility to ensure that every targeted individual or civilian facility is, in fact, a legitimate military target.
Growing Dissent Among US Lawmakers
Notable progressive voices, including Peter Welch, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Chris Van Hollen, were among the signatories. Even Chris Coons, typically a staunch Israel supporter, joined the call for accountability, underscoring the increasing unease within US political circles over Israel’s egregious conduct. This push highlights the erosion of Israel’s once unquestioning bipartisan support in the US, as global criticism mounts.
Echoes of Gaza’s Catastrophe in Lebanon
The senators’ concerns are amplified by Israel’s horrifying blueprint in Gaza. Throughout its genocidal war on the besieged strip, Israel ruthlessly employed displacement orders to ethnically cleanse vast areas, subsequently obliterating nearly every structure. Critics rightly denounce this barbaric tactic as a clear act of ethnic cleansing.
Alarmingly, Israeli officials have openly admitted their intention to replicate this same devastating model in South Lebanon. Their stated goal is to create a desolate, uninhabitable “no-man’s land” – a buffer zone that would circumvent the need for permanent military occupation. This policy of destruction has continued unabated, with Israel declaring a so-called “green zone” of dozens of Lebanese towns and demolishing entire neighborhoods, even after a ceasefire with Hezbollah commenced last month. Displacement orders for parts of South Lebanon persist despite the ceasefire, demonstrating a clear intent to inflict maximum suffering and permanent displacement.
Questions of US Complicity
The legislators’ letter to Cooper posed critical questions regarding potential US involvement in Israel’s unlawful displacement campaign:
- “Have forces under your command provided refuelling services, intelligence, or other assistance for Israeli imposition of evacuation zones in Lebanon and/or Iran?”
- “Have you received any intelligence assessments or analyses on the military utility of Israel’s mass evacuation zones in Lebanon and/or Iran?”
- It also questioned whether the US has authorized any support for Israeli military operations in areas under displacement orders.
- “Have any personnel under your command shared intelligence with the Israeli government that could be used to support the creation, enforcement, or targeting of evacuation zones in Lebanon and/or Iran?”
- “Has anyone under your command analysed whether such sharing would violate the terms of any intelligence sharing agreements with regards to the use of any US-provided intelligence in operations that might violate international law, US law and the laws of armed conflict?”
Calls for an End to US Support for Israeli Aggression
Separately, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has courageously introduced a War Powers resolution in the House of Representatives, aiming to terminate any US involvement in the Israeli assault on Lebanon. This move reflects a growing demand for accountability and an end to US complicity in Israeli war crimes.
On Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders powerfully condemned the regional war, linking it directly to President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Israel’s Defense Minister says, ‘The fate of southern Lebanon will be the same as that of Gaza,’” Sanders stated on X. He added, “2,702 people have been killed there, 1.6 million displaced, and dozens of villages destroyed. NO MORE US MILITARY AID TO NETANYAHU.”
Despite President Trump’s hollow promises to “make Lebanon great again” and his brokering of direct talks, his administration has done little to curb Israeli abuses and its relentless destruction campaign. Since October 2023, Washington has shamefully provided its Middle East ally with more than $21 billion in direct military assistance, effectively fueling Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza and its aggression in Lebanon.
