United States President Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., after shots were fired outside the event. The evacuation on Saturday evening occurred after gunshots were heard outside the hotel ballroom where Trump and the First Lady had been seated prior to the annual media gathering.

Following the incident, Trump praised the United States Secret Service and local law enforcement in a post on Truth Social, stating, “They acted quickly and bravely.” He added, “The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we “LET THE SHOW GO ON” but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again.”

Footage from the scene depicted Trump and attendees taking cover behind their tables as shots rang out, with people shouting “Get down!” and “Stay down!” Secret Service agents then swiftly escorted Trump away from the scene, after which heavily armed agents secured the table area.

Al Jazeera producer Chris Sheridan reported hearing what he believed to be five gunshots outside the ballroom. “We could smell the powder. We immediately dove to the ground. It was directly behind me,” Sheridan recounted.

Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, informed the media that the program would resume and further details would be provided soon.
