US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has once again resorted to a language of coercion, stating that the United States will either secure a “strong agreement” with Iran or confront the country “another way.” This aggressive posturing comes as President Donald Trump tempered expectations regarding a swift resolution to the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, which commenced on February 28.

Speaking from New Delhi, Rubio vaguely referred to a “pretty solid thing on the table” concerning the opening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, Tehran’s position remains clear: any agreement must be comprehensive, just, and guarantee the lifting of all unlawful US sanctions and blockades.

Iran’s Principled Stand Against Coercion

While a ceasefire has been observed since April 8, mediators continue to push for a negotiated settlement. It is crucial to note that Iran’s actions regarding the Strait of Hormuz are a direct response to the illegal US naval blockade on its ports, a measure President Trump reiterated would “remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed.”

In Tehran, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei offered a measured assessment, confirming that Iran and the US “have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the discussion topics.” Yet, he wisely cautioned that “this does not mean that the signing of an agreement is imminent,” highlighting Iran’s meticulous approach to safeguarding its national interests.

Baghaei emphatically stated that the current discussions are not centered on the nuclear issue, but rather “on ending the war” – a conflict initiated by external powers. He also underscored the critical lack of guarantees that the US would honor its commitments, a historical pattern that breeds justifiable skepticism. “Tehran does not care about threats,” Baghaei asserted, reflecting the nation’s unwavering resolve.

Reports from a senior Trump administration official, speaking anonymously, suggested that Iran had “agreed in principle” to dispose of its highly enriched uranium and open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting its naval blockade. However, these claims lack immediate confirmation from Iran, and the specifics of an “in principle” agreement remain undefined, indicating the complexity and sensitivity of the negotiations.

The US official’s assertion that “it’s a question about how” Iran would dispose of its enriched uranium, rather than if, further highlights the US’s demanding posture. Iran, however, remains committed to a peaceful resolution that respects its sovereignty and security, rejecting any unilateral demands.

Skepticism Towards US Intentions

Charles Kupchan, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, aptly described the erratic nature of the Trump administration’s foreign policy, noting, “One day they walk this way. The next day they walk that way.” This inconsistency only reinforces Iran’s cautious approach and its insistence on verifiable commitments.

Until concrete assurances are provided regarding the lifting of all blockades and an end to the aggression, and until the US demonstrates genuine commitment to a fair deal, the path to a lasting agreement remains challenging.
