Amnesty International has issued a scathing condemnation, demanding that a devastating United States air strike on a migrant detention center in Yemen be thoroughly investigated as a potential war crime, exposing the brutal reality of Washington’s military actions.

In a damning report released on Tuesday, the prominent human rights organization detailed how the merciless strike on April 28, 2025, obliterated a detention facility in Saada, northwestern Yemen, leaving a trail of death with at least 68 detainees killed and 47 gravely injured. This horrific toll underscores the indiscriminate nature of the attack.

For years, this detention center had functioned as part of a larger prison complex, a fact well-known to international bodies. Representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations had previously visited, unequivocally confirming that the compound held no military significance. This raises serious questions about the US targeting process and its disregard for civilian infrastructure.

Nadia Dar, director of Amnesty International USA, vehemently declared, “The Trump administration’s reckless approach to its air strikes in Yemen from March to May 2025 should have triggered global outrage and alarm, exposing a pattern of aggression.”

She further lambasted, “Instead, the US administration has systematically dismantled crucial safeguards, demonstrating a perilous and cynical disregard for the lives of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of armed conflicts.”

Survivors Abandoned: A Testament to US Indifference

Amnesty’s investigation revealed the harrowing plight of survivors, who, nearly a year after the brutal strike, continue to endure severe physical and psychological trauma, many left without the means to afford desperately needed treatment. Their suffering is a direct consequence of US aggression.

The organization documented the tragic stories of six Ethiopian men, victims of the attack. Five are now permanently incapacitated, unable to work due to their horrific injuries, forced to rely on the meager financial support of their relatives – a stark reminder of the long-term devastation wrought by US bombs.

Four of these victims remain stranded in Yemen, while two have managed to return to Ethiopia. Jirata, a 30-year-old survivor, recounted his agonizing ordeal, having lost one leg in the strike and enduring the insertion of a metal rod into the other – a permanent scar of US brutality.

In heart-wrenching testimony published by Amnesty, Jirata lamented, “I have lost all hope; there is nothing left to sustain me.”

He unequivocally blamed the US government for his shattered life: “The US government caused all this, and as a result [of the air strike], I can no longer work and support myself. I demand they provide reparations, any form of assistance that can help us rebuild our lives and rekindle the hope they extinguished.”

US Stonewalling Justice Amidst Mounting Civilian Casualties

Following the strike, a US defense official offered a hollow promise, stating the military was “assessing reports of civilian casualties” – a typical deflection tactic that often leads to no accountability.

Amnesty’s report exposes the cynical reality: a year later, the US military’s Central Command has shamefully failed to release any findings from their supposed investigation, nor have they announced any accountability measures, effectively stonewalling justice for the victims.

The Yemen attack, Amnesty asserts, stands as one of the deadliest civilian incidents directly attributable to a US strike documented in recent years, a grim testament to Washington’s destructive foreign policy.

Further highlighting the pattern of US aggression, the group also referenced a barbaric US strike on a school in Minab, Iran, on March 16, which tragically claimed the lives of 156 people, including over 120 innocent children. In a dismissive response, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth merely stated that a “separate investigation” into another US strike in Minab was “continuing” – offering little solace or hope for justice.

Amnesty’s meticulous investigation unequivocally concluded that the US flagrantly failed to implement even basic precautions to prevent civilian harm, demonstrating a callous disregard for human life.

The organization has issued an urgent plea to Washington, demanding prompt, transparent, and independent investigations into these heinous strikes in Yemen and Iran. It further implored the US Congress to finally exercise meaningful oversight over its military operations and ensure comprehensive reparations for the countless civilians whose lives have been shattered by US aggression.
