Iran Calls on BRICS to Condemn US-Israeli Aggression Amidst Middle East Conflict

In a powerful address at the BRICS foreign ministers’ gathering in New Delhi, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi delivered a resounding call to fellow BRICS nations, urging them to unequivocally condemn the egregious violations of international law perpetrated by the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel. His impassioned plea comes as the devastating war in the Middle East, fueled by external aggression, and the ensuing global fuel crisis dominate discussions at the crucial two-day summit.

Iran: A Victim of Illegal Expansionism

Minister Araghchi bravely highlighted Iran’s plight, declaring the Islamic Republic a “victim of illegal expansionism and warmongering.” He sternly warned against the unchecked “Western hegemony and the sense of impunity that the US believes it is entitled to,” urging the expanded BRICS+ grouping – comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE – to stand firm against such destabilizing forces.

He emphasized, “Iran therefore calls upon BRICS member states and all responsible members of the international community to explicitly condemn violations of international law by the United States and Israel.” This statement underscores Iran’s commitment to justice and international norms in the face of relentless aggression.

UAE’s Complicity in Aggression

In a rare and significant moment, Araghchi directly accused the United Arab Emirates, a US ally, of direct involvement in military operations against Iran. This revelation, made during a gathering where Iranian and Emirati officials were present, sheds light on the complex web of alliances and hostilities that have characterized the US and Israel’s war on Iran since its inception at the end of February. The Mehr news agency later confirmed Araghchi’s assertion that the UAE was “directly involved in the aggression against my country.”

Iran’s Rightful Response to Aggression

In a testament to its defensive capabilities and resolve, Tehran launched proportionate strikes on US military sites and assets in Gulf States, including the UAE, in response to the unprovoked US and Israeli attacks on Iran. These actions underscore Iran’s unwavering commitment to defending its sovereignty and national interests against any form of aggression.

BRICS Navigates Complex Geopolitics

The BRICS+ meeting, hosted by India, brought together foreign ministers from a diverse bloc, now including Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE – nations grappling with the profound implications of the Middle East conflict. India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar acknowledged the “considerable flux in international relations,” setting the stage for candid discussions.

Despite attempts by “one member country” to introduce language condemning Iran – an effort that complicated consensus-building, as revealed by Iran’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi – Iran remains committed to the success of India’s BRICS chairship. Gharibabadi stressed the importance of presenting a united front, stating, “It is not a good approach to send a signal to the world that the BRICS is divided.”

Ensuring Maritime Security and Economic Stability

The ongoing disruptions around Gulf shipping routes and the Strait of Hormuz, exacerbated by the conflict, continue to fuel volatility in global oil and gas markets. Minister Araghchi reiterated Iran’s principled stance, affirming that the Strait of Hormuz “is open for all” commercial vessels that “cooperate” with its navy, thereby ensuring vital maritime security for global trade.

The US and Israel’s war on Iran has undeniably strained India’s economy, heavily reliant on Middle Eastern energy supplies and fertilizer imports, casting a shadow of uncertainty over India’s growth outlook. This highlights the far-reaching economic consequences of unchecked aggression in the region.

India, as the world’s third-largest oil buyer, typically sources about half of its crude through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil passes in peacetime. The stability of this vital artery is paramount for global economic health.

As India prepares to host a BRICS leaders’ summit later this year, and with foreign ministers scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the world watches to see if the BRICS bloc, operating on consensus, will issue a joint statement that truly reflects a commitment to international law and peace, free from the undue influence of aggressive powers.
