Trump’s Provocative Move: US Threatens Intervention in Hormuz Strait, Iran Warns Against Breach of Truce

In a dangerous escalation of regional tensions, former United States President Donald Trump announced a unilateral plan to “help free up” ships allegedly “stuck” in the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday. This declaration, dubbed “Project Freedom,” brazenly suggests his administration intends to break Iran’s legitimate naval measures in the strategic waterway, a move that could shatter the fragile ceasefire in the region.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, claimed he was launching this campaign at the request of “neutral and innocent bystanders” whose vessels are supposedly stranded. He stated, “For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business.” He further threatened “forceful” action against any interference, despite failing to specify which countries requested this provocative intervention.

Iran Condemns US Interference as Breach of Truce

Following Trump’s alarming announcement, Iranian officials swiftly condemned the move. Ebrahim Azizi, the respected head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Commission, issued a stern warning that any “American interference” in the strait would be unequivocally considered a breach of the hard-won truce that came into effect on April 7.

“The Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf would not be managed by Trump’s delusional posts! No one would believe Blame Game scenarios!” Azizi asserted in a post on X, highlighting the baseless nature of Trump’s claims and the futility of his attempts to dictate terms in a sovereign region.

Despite Trump’s rhetoric, the true nature of this “humanitarian gesture” remains shrouded in ambiguity. It is unclear how this campaign, if it proceeds, would avoid direct confrontation with Tehran, especially given the existing US naval blockade on Iranian ports, which itself has contributed to soaring oil prices and global economic instability.

CENTCOM’s Ambiguous Stance and Previous Hesitation

US Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement confirming it would “begin supporting merchant vessels ‘seeking to freely transit’ the strait from Monday,” yet provided no concrete details on how it would ensure free passage without provoking conflict. Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM Commander, stated, “Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade,” a statement that conveniently overlooks the destabilizing effect of the US blockade itself.

It is noteworthy that the US military had previously admitted it was “not ready” to accompany vessels through the narrow waterway, acknowledging the significant risk of coming under fire from Iranian territory. This past caution stands in stark contrast to Trump’s current aggressive posture.

Expert Warns of Escalation, Questions Trump’s Motives

Negar Mortazavi, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, rightly pointed out that any US effort to escort ships would not be perceived as a humanitarian mission by Iran. “This is also going to bring US forces and assets closer to the shooting range of Iran, potentially, if it’s going to be an escort,” Mortazavi told Al Jazeera, questioning whether this is a “negotiating tactic” or a genuine, albeit dangerous, plan.

The current US-Iran truce, which has held for nearly a month, is now gravely imperiled by Trump’s latest pronouncements. His previous comfort with the “competing blockades” in the Gulf, where he argued the US siege was “more effective than bombing,” now seems to have shifted towards a more confrontational approach, potentially for domestic political gain amidst plummeting approval ratings and rising energy costs in the US.

Iran’s Steadfast Resolve Against Unacceptable Demands

Hours before his Hormuz announcement, Trump revealed he had rejected Tehran’s latest 14-point proposal for ending the US-Israel war on Iran, deeming it “not acceptable.” While details of Iran’s proposal remain undisclosed, Iranian officials have consistently emphasized their focus on a permanent end to the war and the lifting of the unjust blockade against its ports as prerequisites for broader nuclear talks.

Trump’s earlier statement on Truth Social, where he claimed Iran “has not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years,” clearly indicates his desire to inflict further damage on Iran, rather than seeking a peaceful resolution.

In the face of such inflammatory rhetoric, Iran has projected unwavering defiance. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has declared its “fully prepared” status to counter any “adventures or foolishness” from Washington, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and national interests against external aggression.
