Ukrainian Drone Attacks on Russia Claim at Least Five Lives Amid Escalating Conflict
At least five individuals have tragically lost their lives following a significant wave of Ukrainian drone attacks across Russia. Russian officials have characterized these assaults as one of the largest drone barrages since the onset of the conflict, with numerous unmanned aircraft targeting Moscow and several other regions overnight.
Casualties and Widespread Damage Reported
The Indian embassy in Russia confirmed the death of one Indian worker and injuries to three others during the drone attacks in the Moscow region. Governor Andrei Vorobyov of the Moscow region reported that a woman was killed when a drone struck a house in Khimki, located north of Moscow. Vorobyov also noted extensive damage to apartment buildings and critical infrastructure sites as a result of the attacks.
Rescue teams are actively searching through rubble for another potential victim. Additionally, two men were killed in the village of Pogorelki in the Mytishchi district, and another person died in Belgorod, a city near the Ukrainian border, according to official reports.
Russia’s Defence Intercepts Hundreds of Drones
Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated it had intercepted a staggering 556 drones overnight and into Sunday morning, with an additional 30 drones shot down after dawn. The ministry detailed that these interceptions occurred across 14 Russian regions, as well as over annexed Crimea and the Black and Azov seas, marking one of the most extensive Ukrainian aerial assaults of the conflict to date.
Sheremetyevo airport, Moscow’s largest aviation hub, reported that drone debris had fallen within its grounds but confirmed no resulting damage to its operations or facilities.
Ukraine Justifies Strikes on Russian Targets
Ukraine’s security service, the SBU, later claimed responsibility for the strikes, stating that Ukrainian forces had targeted an oil refinery and two oil-pumping stations in the Moscow region.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the SBU asserted, “Strikes on defence industry facilities, military infrastructure and oil logistics sites reduce the enemy’s ability to continue its war against Ukraine. These attacks show that even the heavily protected Moscow region is not safe.”
Conflict Escalation Amidst Peace Talk Speculation
These attacks coincide with recent suggestions from United States President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that the conflict might be nearing its conclusion. Trump had indicated last week his belief that Moscow and Kyiv would “soon reach a deal” to halt the fighting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky defended the strikes, describing them as “entirely justified” and a direct response to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
“Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and its attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified,” Zelensky stated. “This time, Ukrainian long-range capabilities reached the Moscow region, and we are clearly telling the Russians: their state must end its war.”
Ukraine’s defence ministry highlighted that Moscow and its surrounding region had experienced the largest-scale attack since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Ongoing Hostilities in Ukrainian Territories
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported continued Russian attacks within Ukraine. In the Kharkiv region, authorities stated that Russian forces targeted 15 settlements over the past 24 hours, resulting in seven injuries.
In the southern Kherson region, officials confirmed the death of a 36-year-old man after a Russian drone dropped explosives on the village of Inhulets on Saturday morning.
