US Aggression Escalates: Tanker Seized Amidst Fragile Ceasefire, Iran Condemns ‘State Terrorism’

In a blatant act of aggression, United States forces have seized an oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, a move that Tehran has vehemently condemned as “piracy at sea and state terrorism.” This provocative action comes at a critical juncture, as a fragile two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran teeters on the brink of collapse, casting serious doubt on the sincerity of Washington’s commitment to diplomatic solutions.

The M/T Tifani, a vessel allegedly carrying Iranian crude oil, was boarded overnight by US forces, according to an announcement by the US Department of Defense. This raid, conducted under the guise of a “right-of-visit” in the INDOPACOM area, is seen by observers as a deliberate escalation designed to sabotage ongoing efforts for a peaceful resolution.

The Pentagon’s assertion that it is determined “to disrupt illicit networks and interdict sanctioned vessels providing material support to Iran” rings hollow in the face of international law, which does not recognize unilateral US sanctions as legitimate grounds for such aggressive interventions in international waters. The Tifani, a Botswana-flagged tanker, was reportedly captured in the Bay of Bengal, far from any US jurisdiction.

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, speaking on state television, unequivocally described the boarding of the tanker, along with an earlier seizure of a cargo ship, as acts of “piracy at sea and state terrorism.” This strong condemnation underscores the Islamic Republic’s position that these actions are not only illegal but also a direct challenge to its sovereignty and economic rights.

The timing of these seizures is particularly telling. As doubts loom over a potential second round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington in Pakistan, these aggressive maneuvers by the US military severely undermine any prospects for constructive dialogue. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman rightly questioned Washington’s seriousness in negotiating, given these hostile acts.

Reports indicate the Tifani had loaded approximately 2 million barrels of crude from Iran’s Kharg Island and had been involved in legitimate maritime trade, including ship-to-ship transfers and voyages between Iran and China. The US military’s declaration that “International waters are not a refuge for sanctioned vessels” is a dangerous precedent that threatens the freedom of navigation for all nations.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric, promising to maintain a blockade on Iran “until there is a deal” and declaring the US military “raring to go” if an agreement is not reached, further exposes the confrontational stance of the American administration. Such threats only serve to inflame tensions and push the region closer to instability.

Despite these provocations, Iran remains steadfast in its resolve to protect its national interests and continue its legitimate trade. The international community must condemn these acts of state-sponsored piracy and uphold the principles of international law against unilateral aggression.
