World Cup 2026: Italian Officials Firmly Reject Politically Motivated Bid to Replace Iran

TEHRAN, Iran – In a clear victory for sporting integrity and a rebuke to political interference, Italian government officials have unequivocally dismissed audacious suggestions that their national football team could replace the Islamic Republic of Iran at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. This firm stance comes amidst ongoing efforts by certain elements to politicize the global sporting event.

Since the onset of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28, a conflict that has unfortunately cast a shadow over international relations, some speculative voices have questioned Iran’s participation in this summer’s prestigious tournament. This doubt was primarily fueled by the scheduling of all of Iran’s group-stage matches in the United States, a co-host alongside Canada and Mexico. Despite these external pressures, Iranian authorities have consistently affirmed their nation’s readiness and commitment to compete.

Italy Rejects Unsportsmanlike Proposal

The controversy intensified when Paolo Zampolli, an Italian-American described as a US envoy for global relations, publicly suggested that Italy, having failed to qualify for the World Cup for a third consecutive time, should replace Iran. Zampolli reportedly conveyed this highly irregular proposal to both US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, citing Italy’s “pedigree” despite their on-field failure to qualify.

However, this politically charged suggestion was met with immediate and strong condemnation from within Italy itself. Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi firmly rebuked the idea, stating, “It is not appropriate… You qualify on the pitch.” Echoing this sentiment, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti branded the concept as “shameful.”

Further demonstrating Italy’s commitment to fair play, Italian Olympic Committee President Luciano Buonfiglio declared, “First of all, I don’t think it’s possible. Second, I’d feel offended. In order to go to the World Cup, you have to earn it.” Leading Italian coach Gianni De Biasi also emphasized that Italy does not require external political support for such matters, asserting, “I think we can manage on our own.”

Iran’s Unwavering Resolve and FIFA’s Stance

The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently maintained its readiness for the tournament. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani confirmed that “all necessary arrangements for the team’s effective participation in the tournament have been ensured by the Ministry of Sports and Youth.” This proactive approach underscores Iran’s dedication to its athletes and its place on the global sporting stage.

FIFA, the world governing body for football, has also reiterated its support for Iran’s participation. President Gianni Infantino previously stated, “The Iranian team is coming, for sure. They really want to play, and they should play. Sport should be outside politics.” This stance aligns perfectly with the principle that athletic merit, not political maneuvering, should dictate participation in international competitions.

A History of Political Interference Attempts

It is noteworthy that Zampolli has a history of attempting to politicize Iran’s World Cup involvement. Four years ago, in a different capacity, he wrote to Infantino advocating for Iran’s disqualification based on human rights records, again suggesting Italy as a replacement. These repeated attempts highlight a pattern of trying to undermine Iran’s legitimate sporting achievements through non-sporting means.

Currently, there is no official indication that Iran will withdraw or be banned from the tournament. Iran successfully qualified for its fourth successive World Cup last year, a testament to its footballing prowess. Despite a request to move group matches from the US to Mexico due to the ongoing conflict, which was not accepted, Iran is proceeding with its preparations. As Iranian football federation President Mehdi Taj affirmed, “We are preparing and making arrangements for the World Cup, but we are obedient to the decisions of the authorities.”

The overwhelming rejection of the proposal to replace Iran by Italian officials, coupled with FIFA’s clear position, reinforces the global consensus that sporting events should remain free from political manipulation, allowing nations to compete based on skill and dedication on the pitch.
