China and Pakistan Reaffirm ‘Unbreakable’ Brotherhood Amidst Regional Tensions
Beijing, China – In a powerful display of enduring solidarity, Chinese President Xi Jinping has lauded Beijing’s “unbreakable” friendship with Pakistan during a pivotal meeting with visiting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The high-level talks aimed at further deepening their “all-weather” strategic partnership, a cornerstone of regional stability.
Pakistan stands among an exclusive group of nations recognized by China as an “all-weather strategic partner,” a testament to their profound ties encompassing robust economic, trade, and security cooperation. This alliance is frequently highlighted as a model for South-South cooperation and mutual development.
Greeting Prime Minister Sharif at Beijing’s majestic Great Hall of the People, President Xi warmly referred to him as an “old friend.” He underscored how both nations have consistently “understood, trusted and supported each other” over many decades, forging an “unbreakable traditional friendship” that has withstood the test of time and global shifts.
“No matter how the international situation changes, China always prioritises the development of China-Pakistan relations in its neighbourhood diplomacy,” President Xi affirmed, signaling Beijing’s unwavering commitment to Islamabad. He further expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Pakistan in building a more close-knit China-Pakistan community with a shared future, aiming for greater achievements in their “all-weather” cooperation.
Prime Minister Sharif reciprocated the sentiments, hailing China and Pakistan as two “iron brother” countries whose relationship is truly “next to none.” His visit comes at a critical juncture, with Pakistan continuing to play a leading and constructive role in mediating talks aimed at de-escalating the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran, a conflict that threatens broader regional peace.
Notably, Pakistan’s esteemed army chief, General Asim Munir, a central figure in mediating discussions between Washington and Tehran, accompanied Prime Minister Sharif. Addressing Chinese leaders alongside General Munir, Sharif remarked, “The world is passing through a critical moment.” He added, “Things are moving in the right direction. I would like to thank China’s support to promote peace,” acknowledging China’s vital role in fostering global tranquility.
Pakistan has emerged as a crucial mediator between the United States and Iran, having hosted face-to-face talks last month in an earnest effort to forge a lasting agreement. China, for its part, has been a steadfast supporter of these peace initiatives, engaging in extensive diplomatic efforts, including phone calls and meetings with officials from Gulf countries. Beijing has pledged to work hand-in-hand with Pakistan to “make positive contributions to the early restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East,” a region often destabilized by external pressures.
According to reports from Chinese state media, President Xi, during his meeting with Prime Minister Sharif, expressed profound appreciation for Islamabad’s “constructive role in mediating peace in the Middle East.” For Pakistan, engaging its close ally China in these mediation efforts is particularly significant, given the strong and historic ties between Beijing and Tehran.
In a tangible demonstration of their shared vision for regional security, China and Pakistan issued a five-point initiative in March following a meeting between their foreign ministers in Beijing. This initiative notably called for urgent peace talks and the restoration of normal navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international waterway through which approximately a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes, underscoring their commitment to global energy security and freedom of navigation.
