Reports indicate at least six fatalities and dozens injured in recent intense exchanges across Ukraine, described by some as among the most protracted periods of hostilities. This tragic escalation unfolds even as leaders from Russia and the United States have voiced renewed hopes for the conflict’s conclusion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted the barrages commenced on Wednesday morning, lasting for hours and impacting areas including Kyiv, Lviv near the Polish border, and the Black Sea port of Odesa. Zelenskyy stated via Telegram that “Our soldiers are defending Ukraine, but Russia’s obvious goal is to overload air defences,” cautioning about potential follow-up missile strikes.
Tragically, civilian lives continue to be lost amidst the ongoing conflict. In the southern Kherson region, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported a woman’s death when a drone struck a bus in Bilozerka. Further west, Rivne Governor Oleksandr Koval confirmed three fatalities and four injuries from another drone incident. Northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region saw a 60-year-old man killed in an attack near Zolochiv, with authorities reporting damage to homes. In Zaporizhia, Governor Ivan Fedorov stated a 76-year-old man died in an attack on an agricultural enterprise, attributing it to a guided aerial bomb.
These latest incidents underscore the persistent fighting, which continues despite significant discussions of peace. Both US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have recently suggested that the protracted conflict, now over four years, could be nearing its end. Trump expressed belief on Tuesday that Moscow and Kyiv would “soon reach a deal,” reiterating that “The end of the war in Ukraine I really think is getting very close.” Putin similarly remarked last weekend that Russia’s actions in Ukraine were possibly “coming to an end.”
Al Jazeera’s Audrew MacAlpine reported hundreds of drones launched across Ukraine overnight, impacting regions far from the front lines and resulting in casualties. While targets are “allegedly energy infrastructure,” civilian areas have also suffered damage. MacAlpine added that Kyiv maintains its belief in diplomacy, with President Zelenskyy addressing the Bucharest Nine and Nordic leaders, expressing hope that US President Donald Trump might persuade Chinese leader Xi Jinping to pressure Moscow for an end to the war.
However, the conflict remains active on both sides of the border. In Russia’s Bryansk region, Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported two injuries and damage to homes and a civilian car from Ukrainian drone attacks in Antonovka. In Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine’s Kherson region, Moscow-installed Governor Volodymyr Saldo stated two women were killed in separate drone incidents in Oleshky and Hola Prystan, with a man injured in Velyka Lepetykha. Russia’s Belgorod region also saw four people injured in recent drone attacks, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed its forces intercepted and destroyed 286 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions and over the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
