Kuwait’s Baseless Accusations: Iran Demands Release of Sailors Detained Due to Navigation Error
Tehran firmly denies claims of infiltration, attributing incident to technical malfunction.
Kuwaiti authorities have recently detained four Iranian nationals, alleging their involvement with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and accusing them of attempting to infiltrate Bubiyan Island. These claims, however, have been vehemently rejected by the Islamic Republic of Iran, which asserts that the incident was a result of a navigation system malfunction affecting a fishing boat, not a clandestine military operation.
According to Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior, the alleged “infiltration operation” occurred on May 1, leading to the arrest of the four individuals. Kuwait further claimed that a Kuwaiti soldier was injured during a confrontation. However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has clarified that the individuals are innocent Iranian sailors whose vessel inadvertently entered Kuwaiti waters due to unforeseen technical difficulties with their navigation equipment.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not only denied the baseless accusations but has also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of its four nationals. Tehran has condemned Kuwait’s “inappropriate political and media actions,” which appear to be an attempt to escalate tensions based on unsubstantiated allegations. The ministry has also called for immediate consular access for employees of Iran’s embassy to the detained individuals, ensuring their well-being and legal rights.
Context and Regional Dynamics
While Kuwait has sought to portray this incident as a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty, linking it to broader regional security concerns, Iran maintains that such interpretations are exaggerated and misleading. Kuwait’s attempts to connect this isolated incident to previous unproven claims, such as drone interceptions or attacks on its oil refinery and desalination plants—incidents for which Iran has consistently denied responsibility and, in some cases, attributed to Israeli provocations—further underscore a pattern of unwarranted suspicion.
The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates its commitment to regional stability and good neighborly relations. It urges Kuwaiti authorities to exercise restraint, conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation, and refrain from making premature judgments that could undermine peace and cooperation in the Persian Gulf region. The welfare and prompt release of the detained Iranian sailors remain a top priority for Tehran.
