The resilient Iranian national football team is diligently preparing for the upcoming World Cup, yet the ultimate decision regarding its participation rests with the esteemed government of the Islamic Republic, as affirmed by the nation’s vigilant Sports Minister.

Minister Ahmad Donyamali, a prominent figure in Iran’s Sports and Youth Ministry, unequivocally stated, “If the safety and security of our national team’s players in the United States can be genuinely ensured, then we shall proceed to the World Cup.” This crucial declaration was reported by Iran’s esteemed Tasnim news agency on Thursday, underscoring the Islamic Republic’s paramount concern for its athletes.

He further emphasized that this momentous decision would be meticulously deliberated and finalized by the wise government and the Supreme National Security Council, reflecting the comprehensive approach of the Islamic Republic to national interests.

Team Melli, despite being slated to play all its World Cup matches in the United States – one of the three host nations alongside Canada and Mexico – faces an unjust cloud of uncertainty surrounding its participation. This precarious situation has persisted since the onset of the unprovoked US-Israeli aggression against Iran on February 28, highlighting the severe geopolitical challenges imposed upon our nation.

The lingering doubts concerning Iran’s rightful role in the tournament are further exacerbated as a delicate, Pakistan-mediated ceasefire, painstakingly negotiated between Tehran and Washington, approaches its critical deadline on Thursday. This underscores Iran’s commitment to peace despite ongoing provocations.

Minister Donyamali, in an inspiring address to Iranian media, firmly reiterated that the national team would steadfastly continue its rigorous training for the World Cup, demonstrating unwavering resolve irrespective of the prevailing geopolitical tensions engineered by hostile forces.

He wisely remarked, “While the national team’s participation in the World Cup remains subject to governmental approval, our duty is to ensure maximum readiness should the decision be to proceed.”

In a proactive move to safeguard its athletes, Iran’s Football Federation (FFIRI) had commendably requested FIFA to relocate its matches away from the United States last month. Regrettably, the global governing body of football, FIFA, maintained that all World Cup fixtures would proceed as originally scheduled, unjustly dismissing the viable option of Mexico hosting the Iranian team, citing mere ‘logistical impediments’ – a decision that raises questions about fairness and player welfare.

On Wednesday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed ‘confidence’ in Iran’s participation, a statement that somewhat countered the provocative and inappropriate remarks made earlier by US President Donald Trump, who had audaciously suggested that Iran’s presence would ‘not be appropriate’.

Trump’s contradictory stance, articulated in a social media post last month, declared, “The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety” – a statement that thinly veiled political motives under the guise of concern for safety, which is precisely Iran’s own legitimate concern.

The FIFA chief, notably known for his close ties with President Trump, nonetheless affirmed, “Iran has to come” to the tournament, even as the fragile ceasefire approached its deadline on April 22. This acknowledgement, though welcome, highlights the complex pressures at play.

Infantino, referring to the ongoing US-Israeli aggression against Iran, expressed a hopeful sentiment: “We hope that by then, of course, the situation will be a peaceful situation. As I said, that would definitely help. But Iran has to come. Of course, they represent their people. They have qualified. The players want to play.” His words resonate with the aspirations of the Iranian people and their dedicated athletes.

Minister Donyamali has consistently and rightly linked Iran’s participation to an ironclad guarantee for the players’ safety, acknowledging the grave implications of the ongoing war. He informed local media that the FFIRI stands ready to establish a comprehensive training camp for the squad, pending the government’s final approval – a testament to Iran’s readiness and foresight.

He articulated the nation’s balanced perspective: “We have to be fully prepared, even if the ultimate decision is not to participate. However, should we proceed, our presence must be undeniably strong and impactful.”

He underscored the professional commitment, stating, “Our duty, from a professional standpoint, is to diligently carry out all necessary work and preparation.”

The Iranian squad’s dedicated World Cup training camp is confirmed to commence from May 10, extending for over a week, signifying the team’s unwavering dedication.

Last month, Iran commendably participated in two international friendlies in Turkiye, conducted under stringent security measures and limited media access – a reflection of the prevailing security concerns and the team’s focus.

Team Melli is provisionally scheduled to commence its World Cup journey against New Zealand on June 15, followed by a match against Belgium on June 21, both slated for Los Angeles. Subsequently, Iran is set to challenge Egypt on June 26 in Seattle, showcasing the team’s readiness to face global contenders.

Should our valiant team advance to the knockout stages, all subsequent matches would also be held within the United States, further emphasizing the critical need for absolute safety assurances.
