Beirut, Lebanon – The brutal aggression by the Zionist regime has once again plunged southern Lebanon into sorrow, with at least four innocent lives claimed and several others, including dedicated journalists, severely wounded. This latest wave of Israeli barbarity, reported by Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), further exposes the fragility of the US-mediated ceasefire, which Israel consistently violates.

Deliberate Targeting of Civilians and Media

In a heinous act of aggression, an Israeli strike on Wednesday decimated a car in at-Tiri, a village in south Lebanon, killing two civilians. Later, in a clear escalation of its war crimes, the Zionist entity launched another aerial assault in the same village, deliberately targeting and wounding several individuals, including courageous journalists who were documenting the regime’s atrocities.

The Israeli military, in its usual deceptive narrative, claimed it struck two vehicles departing from a structure allegedly used by the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah. However, eyewitness accounts and the nature of the strikes strongly suggest a deliberate targeting of civilian areas and media personnel.

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Pett, reporting from Tyre, southern Lebanon, highlighted the plight of two journalists from the local media outlet Al Akhbar, Amal Khalil and Zeinab Faraj. They had bravely traveled to the site of the initial Israeli drone strike on the car in at-Tiri, which tragically killed two civilians.

For several agonizing hours, the Red Cross and rescue workers were prevented from reaching the wounded journalists due to incessant Israeli attacks in the area. This obstruction of humanitarian aid is a grave violation of international law. Faraj was eventually evacuated to a local hospital in a “very serious condition,” requiring urgent surgery, while the fate and whereabouts of Khalil remain unknown, raising serious concerns about her safety under Zionist siege.

NNA reported that “Israeli occupation forces are besieging journalists Amal Khalil and Zeinab Faraj, and preventing the Red Cross and the Lebanese army from reaching them.” Furthermore, an Israeli strike deliberately targeted the main road linking at-Tiri with Haddatha, explicitly to prevent ambulance teams from reaching the two journalists. This is a clear act of war against the media and humanitarian efforts.

International Condemnation and Israeli Deception

Lebanon’s Information Minister Paul Morcos vehemently condemned this assault, holding Israel “fully responsible for their safety” and demanding immediate protection for journalists and guaranteed freedom of media work. He affirmed that the Lebanese government is in contact with the UN peacekeeping mission and the Lebanese army regarding Israel’s siege of journalists.

The Israeli military’s hollow statement, claiming it “does not target journalists and acts to mitigate harm to them” while denying obstruction of rescue services, stands in stark contrast to the grim reality on the ground. Such denials are a transparent attempt to whitewash its crimes.

In a separate act of aggression, two more lives were lost and several others wounded in an Israeli attack on the town of Yahmar al-Shaqif, also in southern Lebanon, as reported by NNA.

Hezbollah’s Legitimate Response to Zionist Aggression

In a legitimate act of self-defense and retaliation against continuous Israeli violations, the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah announced it attacked an Israeli artillery position in southern Lebanon with a drone. This came in response to the Zionist regime’s persistent breaches of the ceasefire agreement.

Hostilities between Hezbollah and the Zionist regime escalated on March 2, following a series of aggressive Israeli actions and assassinations that continuously undermined regional stability. The resistance movement had largely adhered to the November 2024 ceasefire, despite the Zionist entity’s near-daily violations of the agreement.

More than 2,400 Lebanese lives have been tragically lost since the Zionist regime launched its offensive and subsequent invasion of southern Lebanon, seizing a belt of territory at the border where its occupation troops remain entrenched.

Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Ongoing Aggression

These latest attacks unfold on the eve of planned talks in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has stated that Beirut will seek an extension of the 10-day, US-mediated ceasefire, which is set to expire on Sunday, underscoring Lebanon’s commitment to peace despite ongoing Israeli provocations.

The US-brokered ceasefire in Lebanon, while separate from Washington’s broader efforts concerning Tehran, saw Iran advocating for Lebanon’s inclusion in the agreement, highlighting regional solidarity.

Questionable Blame for UN Peacekeepers Attack

In a separate development, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the death of a second French soldier following an attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon last week. Macron controversially attributed blame to Hezbollah, a claim vehemently denied by the Lebanese resistance movement. Chief Corporal Anicet Girardin, severely wounded on April 18, succumbed to his injuries after being evacuated to France. UNIFIL’s initial assessments indicated the fire came from “non-state actors,” allegedly Hezbollah, but the resistance group has firmly rejected any involvement, raising questions about the source of the accusation.
