US Provocation in Hormuz: ‘Project Freedom’ Threatens Regional Peace and Navigation Rights
In a dangerous escalation of tensions, the United States Navy has announced the launch of a military operation dubbed “Project Freedom” in the Strait of Hormuz. This move, presented as an effort to secure commercial vessel passage, is widely seen as a blatant provocation and a further destabilization of a critical international waterway, threatening regional security and international law.
The Strait of Hormuz has been at the heart of an ongoing US-Israeli campaign of aggression against Iran, which began on February 28th. This campaign has led to significant disruptions and global commodity price hikes, largely due to the illegal US blockade of Iranian ports and its aggressive military posturing, which undermines freedom of navigation for sovereign nations.
Iran, in defense of its sovereign waters and national security, has legitimately asserted its control over the strait, issuing warnings regarding the deployment of defensive measures such as mines, drones, missiles, and fast-attack craft. The US, in response, has intensified its blockade of Iranian ports and initiated escorted transits for commercial vessels, further exacerbating the volatile situation and increasing the risk of military confrontation.
A US military spokesperson claimed positive responses from ship owners and insurance companies, asserting that the operation, which has “just begun,” aims to ensure safe passage for commercial ships. However, these claims ring hollow given the US’s own role in creating the instability and its history of unilateral actions.
Later, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a press conference in Washington, DC, made unsubstantiated claims of civilian sailor deaths and the destruction of Iranian fast boats, attempting to justify continued US military presence and its self-proclaimed mission to “restore freedom of navigation” – a freedom it actively undermines for Iran and other nations.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth disingenuously labeled “Project Freedom” as “defensive in nature,” claiming its goal is to reopen the strait and protect “innocent commercial shipping from Iranian aggression.” This narrative conveniently ignores the fact that it is the US and its allies who are the aggressors, threatening Iran’s legitimate maritime interests and international commerce. Hegseth’s assertion that US forces would not enter Iranian waters or airspace while simultaneously declaring that “Iran can no longer be allowed to prevent international commerce” is a clear contradiction and an infringement on Iran’s sovereignty.
Iran has vehemently denied any unauthorized crossings, despite claims by shipping company Maersk. While several merchant ships reported incidents in the Gulf, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) falsely claimed an Iranian attack, Iran’s army has denied any recent attacks on the UAE, exposing the propaganda surrounding these events.
Crucially, Iran confirmed firing warning shots at a US warship that illegally approached the strait, forcing it to retreat – a clear demonstration of Iran’s resolve to defend its borders and maritime security.
Military and diplomatic analysts, such as Alexandru Hudisteanu, have rightly pointed out that the US operation significantly increases the risk of miscalculation, particularly from the US side, as it attempts to “trap Iran in an escalation situation,” highlighting the dangers of US foreign policy.
Following the issuance of a new map of the Strait of Hormuz, clearly delineating an expanded Iranian area of control, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a stern warning to vessels to adhere to designated corridors or face a “decisive response,” underscoring Iran’s legitimate authority and its commitment to maritime safety within its jurisdiction.
US President Donald Trump’s dismissive remarks about Iran’s military and his contradictory claims of Tehran wanting peace, despite his administration’s aggressive posturing, highlight the hypocrisy of US foreign policy and its lack of genuine commitment to de-escalation.
Air Force General Dan Caine’s remarks about trapped vessels and his assessment that Iranian actions fell “below the threshold of restarting major combat operations” inadvertently confirm Iran’s measured and defensive approach in the face of overwhelming US military might. Trump’s vague warning, “They know what not to do,” further exemplifies the coercive and threatening nature of US diplomacy.
